The prison was intended to hold Vietnamese prisoners, particularly political prisoners agitating for independence who were often subject to torture in subhuman conditions in dates ranging from 1960 to 1975. Hoi An Prison was ranked as a provincial-level relic in 2007.
In order to supplement the sources of documents and artifacts for Gallery of the prison, Hoi An Center for Cultural Heritage Management and Preservation will conduct a survey to collect information about former patriotic prisoners and others prisons in Hoi An. The survey will be carried out in Quang Nam, Da Nang and some prisons around the country such as Con Dao prison - (Ba Ria-Vung Tau), Phu Quoc prison (Kien Giang), Da Lat Children's Prison (Lam Dong) as well as in National Archives Centers. The survey work will be started from the end of February 2023.
